When will Weather Alert Days happen?

Weather Alert Days happen when weather conditions threaten your safety in Washington D.C., Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. They also happen on days when the weather is a nuisance and may cause you to change your plans.
Weather Alert Days can be issued at a moment's notice as conditions change.
What could trigger a Weather Alert Day?
- Strong thunderstorms/ high winds
- Flooding
- Potential hail
- Increasing tornado risk
- Predicted snow or ice on roads, trees, or power lines
- Heat index above 105 or wind chill below 10 degrees
- Tropical system approaching the area
What if the weather gets even more serious?
Weather Alert Days are separate from a severe weather warning such a tornado watch or tornado warning. Storm Team4 meteorologists will issue a separate alert for these weather conditions. You can subscribe to get weather alerts sent to your phone by downloading the NBC Washington app.
