Earth Day Events at Restos, Bars, Stores and on the National Mall

EVENTS

  • The Earth Day Climate Rally on the National Mall aims to gather support for renewable energy, sustainable consumption and the development of green jobs. Expect environmental activities and musical guests including Sting, John Legend, The Roots and Joss Stone. Rally speakers will include Rev. Jesse Jackson and author Margaret Atwood. Sunday, April 25, 11 a.m.-6 p.m.
     
  • The Environmental Protection Agency is hosting EPA@40, an eco-friendly fair with an environmental crime scene forensics demo, climate-change exhibits and a performance stage. It's happening between 4th and 7th streets N.W. on the National Mall. Saturday, April 24, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Sunday, April 25, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
     
  • GreenGW hosts an Earth Day event at GW's University Yard (between 20th and 21st, H and G streets N.W.). Activities include mini solar car races and tree planting, hearing from local environmental groups, and plenty of noshing on organic and vegetarian goodies. Stop by the recycling truck for giveaways while recycling your bottles. Thursday, April 22, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
     
  • The National Zoo's (3001 Connecticut Ave. N.W.) Earth Day Clean-Up is looking for volunteers to collect litter in a wooded area of the zoo near the Connecticut Avenue entrance. Saturday, April 24, 8-10 a.m.
       
  • NASA is celebrating Earth Week with the NASA Village on the National Mall near the Smithsonian Metro. Three tents house exhibits, demos and multimedia presentations. Now through Sunday, April 25.
     
  • The Phillips Collection (1600 21st St. N.W.) hosts Earth Day, Landscape and Local Food. Inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe's connection to the environment, Maryland winemaker Robert Lyons, chef Nora Pouillon of Restaurant Nora and Pennsylvania farmer Mark Toigo of Toigo Orchards to discuss their relationships to their surroundings, followed by a light tasting follows. Thursday, April 22, 6:30 p.m.; $15; registration required.
     

FOOD/DRINKS

  • The JW Marriott's Bar 1331 (1331 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W.) has launched a special menu of eco-cocktails ($12) and organic summer white wines by the glass (starting at $9). Thirty percent of the proceeds will be donated to the protection and preservation of 1.4 million acres of endangered rainforest. Patrons will also be able to make an additional $10 donation on their checks. April 22 through summer.
     
  • Bread & Brew (1247 20th St. N.W.) goes vegan for Earth Day, serving only vegan items. Plus, 10 percent of the day's sales will go to Compassion Over Killing. Thursday, April 22, 7 a.m.-11 p.m. Plus, they'll launch their new Meatless Mondays menu on April 26.
     
  • All three locations of Busboys and Poets (2021 14th St. N.W.; 1025 5th St. N.W. and 4251 S. Campbell Ave., Arlington) don't just have happy hours, they have Green Hours. Swill eco-friendly cocktails featuring sustainable spirits from VeeV and Leopold Bros. Thursday, April 22, 5 p.m.-midnight.
     
  • GreenDrinks D.C. hosts an Earth Day happy hour at Urbana (2122 P St. N.W.), with a 10-minute spotlight on the group Sharing Backyards, which links people who have unused yard space with those looking for a place to grow food. Thursday, April 22; 5:30-7:30 p.m.
     
  • Firefly (1310 New Hampshire Ave. N.W.) is giving guests a $1 credit for every wine cork brought in for lunch and dinner (up to 22 corks per check!), and will recycle all corks collected. Look for the five-course menu from Chef Danny Bortnick, featuring produce from local farms.
     
  • Jackson 20 (480 King St., Alexandria) kicks off its new Eco Hour with an extensive canned beer list; plus, a "Late Night Blackout" happy hour will launch at 11 p.m., when the spot will serve happy hour specials by candle light. April 22 through summer.
     
  • Poste (555 8th St. N.W.) reopens its courtyard will a 400-pound pig roast -- seems counter-productive to Earth Day but it's from from Eco Friendly Foods, so it must be OK, right? Your $15 entry free (cash only) will grant you a taste of pork and one of the spot's garden punches. All Garden Menu food items and select drinks will be available for $4 each. A portion of the entrance fee and food and beverage sales will go toward local garden projects. Thursday, April 22, 5:30-8 p.m.
     
  • The Earth Day tasting menu at Restaurant Nora (2132 Florida Ave. N.W.) includes seasonal spring vegetables and cocktails; the resto will donate $1 from each seasonal cocktail to the Earth Day Network. Tuesday-Wednesday, April 20-21; 5:30-10 p.m. 
     
  • Stoney's Lounge (1433 P St. N.W.) hosts a happy hour from Socialize Better, with proceeds to benefit Historic Green, a zero-carbon community being built in New Orleans. The entrance fee is $3 at the door, or the donation of an old electronic, such as a cell phone or laptop, to be e-cycled. April 22, 6-9 p.m.  
     
  • Tallula (2761 Washington Blvd., Arlington) will serve a four-course sustainable dinner for $85/person. The meal includes locally grown produce, humanely raised meat and sustainable seafood, plus Virginia wine pairings. Plus, diners will learn about the ethical standards, grass-based farming and sustainable fishing practices. Thursday, April 22; call 703-778-5051 for reservations. 

     
  • Visit environmentally friendly bistro ZestDC (735 8th St. S.E.) any time this week to receive a tree seedling to plant. Sun.-Wed. 11 a.m.-10 p.m.; Thu.-Sat. 11 a.m.-11 p.m.

  • The Body Shop (3207 M St. N.W., Union Station and others) is offering 20 percent off your purchase, if you opt to not use a shopping bag in honor of Earth Day. Now through Thursday, April 22.
     
  • Lush (3066 M St. N.W.) hosts its Charity for Earth celebration Sunday with edication on their eco-friendly beauty ingredients, raffles and more. RSVP to georgetown@lushusa.com. Sunday, April 25.
     
  • OK, this one's not during Earth Week, but... Jouvence Aveda at Pentagon Row (1101 S. Joyce St., Arlington) will donate proceeds from all haircuts ($60), 15-minute chair massages ($34), 15-minute hand and foot massages ($34), manis, pedis and waxing to the Potomac Conservancy. Monday, May 3, 4-8 p.m.
