Cyber Security Center Planned for USNA

Program would aid cyber security training

A new cyber warrior training facility may be coming to the U.S. Naval Academy.

The facility would train students in a growing field of national importance, allowing them to apply their class work in real-life situations, said Andrew Phillips, the Naval Academy's chief academic officer.

Officials from the academy approached senior Navy officials today to gauge interest in the idea.

The facility would cost between $80 million and $100 million.

A lawmaker on the academy's Board of Visitors said cyber security is important in national defense.

"The cyber threat is probably one of the biggest threats our nation faces, and our future leaders, I'm sure, will be so much involved with cyber," said Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md.

The U.S. Military Academy at West Point and the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Co., have made cyber security a part of the curriculum taken by all students.

The concept is in its preliminary stages, Phillips said.

"No decisions or promises have been made to anyone," he said.
