A pilot escaped injuries after his small plane crashed at Leesburg Executive Airport in Virginia on Thursday morning.
The twin-engine Piper PA-31 landed short of runway 35 in an open field around 11:15 a.m. Thursday, according to the FAA and Leesburg Police.
The plane had taken off from Dulles International Airport en route to Pennsylvania, but diverted to Leesburg after the pilot reported an engine failure.
The aircraft's left main gear collapsed when it landed in an open field.
The pilot, who is from Florida, was the sole person aboard. He was not injured, said a Leesburg Police Department spokesman.
Leesburg Police are investigating the crash; the FAA will also investigate.
The airport is closed as of midday, Leesburg Police said.
