A man from Montgomery County, Maryland, is one of 10 sailors missing after the USS John McCain collided with an oil tanker near Singapore.
The family of Kevin Sayer Bushell said he was on the warship when the crash happened Monday.
Bushell graduated from Gaithersburg High School in 2009 and joined the Navy seven years ago.
"Our family asks for privacy during this very difficult time as we continue to wait for further information from the United States Navy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the other missing sailors," a family spokesperson said in a statement.
The Navy's 7th Fleet said "significant damage" to the McCain's hull resulted in the flooding of adjacent compartments including crew berths, machinery and communications rooms.
Navy divers have found the remains of some of the 10 missing sailors. Five sailors were hurt in the crash.
