A popular D.C. teenager who planned to go into the military after graduating in the spring was shot and killed at a house party last weekend.
Police were called to the 200 block of T Street NE in Eckington around 1:40 a.m. Sunday for a shooting. Officials said more than 20 shots were fired at a home where dozens of teenagers had gathered for a house party. The bullets struck the house, railing and fence and when it was all over, 17-year-old Andrew Newman was dead.
According to the man who hosted the party Saturday night into early Sunday morning, five teens gathered on the porch around 8:30 p.m.
"They walked up on the porch and robbed one of the kids of his shoes... the young kid said he put the gun in his mouth," the host, who wanted to remain anonymous, told News4.
Police took a report at the scene and left.
Newman's family and friends are mourning the Dunbar High School student's sudden death; the school's basketball game Monday night was canceled. Crisis counselors were on campus this week to help grieving students.
"He was peaceful, never got in any kind of trouble. It's a tragedy and it hurts me too," Andrew's uncle Robert Gray said.
