A car struck a Maryland State Police trooper who stopped to help another driver on Interstate 95 in Hanover Thursday afternoon.
The crash closed southbound I-95 before the Maryland 100 exit for a short period, but lanes then reopened.
Trooper Tristen Phillip, 27, was in his cruiser on the shoulder of I-95 when the car struck the cruiser, which then struck the disabled vehicle Phillip stopped to help. He was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore with serious injuries but is expected to recover.
The driver of the car that hit the cruiser, 31-year-old Rodney Irons Jr., was taken to Howard County General Hospital by ambulance in unknown condition.
Irons was driving without a license, police said. Charges are pending.
The driver of the disabled vehicle, 72-year-old Ellen Pell, and her passenger, 73-year-old Melvin Pell, refused medical treatment at the scene.
Trooper Phillips has been with Maryland State Police for two years.
