A man is dead after a blaze at a Southeast D.C. home without functioning smoke detectors, D.C. Fire and EMS says.
Firefighters responded to an apartment on the 200 block of Oakwood Street SE about 4 a.m. Inside, they found a man suffering serious injuries.
The man was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, firefighters said.
The blaze was contained to one room of a first-floor apartment and has been controlled, firefighters say. Firefighters said they found smoke alarms in the apartment, bu no indication that they were working.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause.
