A man who shot and seriously wounded an 8-year-old girl in Southeast D.C. pleaded guilty to multiple charges Wednesday.
Last Valentine’s Day, 20-year-old Karie Brown and his friend Nathaniel “Psycho” Patten, 21, first attempted to rob an individual they believed sold marijuana in a Southeast apartment complex.
Eight-year-old Makayla Darden held the door open for them as she headed out to play in the snow, police said.
When his intended target ran outside, Brown fired multiple shots, one of which hit Makayla in the chest.
Initially in critical condition, she required immediate surgery but eventually made a full recovery. Brown and Patten fled the scene and were quickly apprehended.
As part of a plea deal, Brown has pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault while armed, assault with intent to rob while armed and unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The plea, which is subject to the court’s approval, calls for 14 to 21 years in prison. Previously convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery in an unrelated case, Brown will be sentenced in mid-December. Patten, who pleaded not guilty, is awaiting trial.
