D.C. police say a 13-year-old boy was shot and killed by his best friend Tuesday night in what is being investigated as a tragic accident.
Police say Tyrin Caldwell was playing with a 14-year-old friend at the friend's third-floor apartment in the 1400 block of Downing Street NE.
At the time of the shooting around 7 p.m. Tuesday, Tyrin's father and the 14-year-old's mother were outside the apartment talking.
When he heard the shots, Tyrin's father ran inside to help. He said his son kept crying, "Daddy, hurt" over and over again. The boy later died.
His father told News4 that he hopes no charges would be brought against his son's friend, who was placed in police custody immediately following the shooting.
If police learn that the gun belonged to the 14-year-old's mother, she could be charged for not keeping it properly secured.
