Hhgregg will close 88 stores, including all its locations in the D.C. area, the appliance, electronics and furniture seller announced Thursday.
“We are strategically exiting markets and stores that are not financially profitable for us,” company CEO Robert J. Riesbeck said in a statement.
The hhgregg delivery and distribution center in Brandywine, Maryland, also will close.
This move will leave the Indianapolis company with 132 stores nationwide.
The 61-year-old company is preparing to file for bankruptcy amid low sales, people familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.
After the last hhgregg in the D.C. region closes its doors for good, the closest location will be in Winchester, Virginia, about 80 miles from D.C.
