4-Year-Old Girl, Grandfather Drown at Anne Arundel County Home: Police

A 4-year-old girl and her grandfather drowned Thursday afternoon at a home in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, police say.

County police said the double drowning happened on Jamar Drive in Severna Park, Maryland.

Neighborhood children were swimming when the girl, who couldn't swim, jumped into the deep end, police spokesman Lt. Ryan Frashure said

The girl's 51-year-old grandfather went in after her, but began struggling. Frashure says the other children ran to the girl's great-grandmother, who found the two at the bottom of the pool and called 911.

Rescuers pulled them from the pool and rushed them to the hospital, where officials say they were pronounced dead.

Editor's Note: Police previously said the man who died was the girl's uncle, but issued an update saying he was her grandfather. This story has been updated.
