The District's homicide rate recently surpassed the total for all of 2007, and has increased for the second straight year.
The total is now at 183 after a man was shot and killed Tuesday morning in the 1600 block of 11th Street NW.
Homicides have dropped in the District since an all-time high of 479 in 1991. In 2006, the number dropped to 169, but climbed to 181 in 2007 and now to 183 so far this year.
As of Dec. 10, police have recovered 2,416 weapons in the District, compared to a total of 2,932 last year.
