Database Cited in Failure of Virginia Tech Phone Alerts

Sounds similar to gunfire heard on campus Thursday

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The company that transmits emergency warnings to cell phones for Virginia Tech is looking into why its system failed to deliver all the messages during a campus scare.

A database problem was the reason not all of the text and phone mail messages got through Thursday after sounds similar to gunfire erupted near a dormitory, said Cinta Putra, the chief executive officer for 3n Global.

The company is looking for the root cause of the database problem, Putra said in a statement Friday.

The campus also was alerted by e-mails, the school Web page and on digital classroom message boards.

A dormitory was locked down for two hours until police determined that the sounds came from an exploding nail-gun cartridge.
