DC Up Next for Same-Sex Marriage?

Change.org thinks so

With Iowa's recent decision to recognize same-sex marriages, many are asking the question, "Who will be next?"

The District is a strong possibility, according to Change.org.

Washington, D.C., came in at No. 5 on the organization's list of who it thinks could be next to join the same-sex marriage club.

The list:

  1. Maine
  2. Vermont
  3. New York
  4. California
  5. D.C.

Why D.C.? Change.org points to strong support in the mayor's office and on city council.

"... according to the Washington Blade, not only does the mayor (Adrian Fenty) support same-sex marriage, but at least 10 out of the 13 city councilors support marriage equality too. Openly gay City Councilor David Catania has promised to introduce a marriage equality bill later in 2009. So while the federal government may still be on the dark side of history when it comes to recognizing equal marriage rights for all, the city that the federal government calls home may just take a step forward for civil rights."
