Police Shoot, Kill Pit Bull in Northwest DC

Police shot and killed a pit bull in northwest Washington, D.C., Wednesday afternoon.

Someone called 911 after another dog bit a woman, police said. When police arrived at the scene in the 200 block of Gallatin Street NW, a 2 1/2- year-old pit bull named Nora moved toward an officer, so the officer fired, police said.

"A lady had been bit by one dog, and the other dog charged at the officer as he was getting out of his vehicle, and he discharged one round," Cmdr. Wilfredo Manlapaz said.

A witness named Diego told News4 it didn't have to end like it did.

"It didn't have to happen because I chased the dog back up to the house with a stick," he said. "I said, 'Go, get back in the house.' I let them in, somehow they got out. I don't know how they got back out again. They got back out and the next thing I hear and see was the officer pointing his gun and shot the dog."

The Humane Society removed the dog's body from the scene. The other dog also was taken from the scene.

The woman was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
