Just when you thought you could speed in a tunnel and get your inner Mario Andretti on, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty is proposing to put speed cameras in the tunnels around the District.
This end to the last bastion of IndyCar-type driving in the District, is not the only measure that is being looked at to help meet the budget shortfalls in the District.
Here is a quick list of our favorites from the $5.3B District budget proposal:
- The city will start charging for parking meters on all Saturdays
- The city intends to raise more money to repair and replace street lights by adding a small surcharge to every power bill
- The mayor wants to eliminate sales tax holidays that occur just before the school year and Christmas
That said, the proposed budget is nearly 4 percent less than last year's. The council is reviewing the budget proposal from Mayor Fenty, and will be holding public hearings over the comming weeks during the almost eight-week process to confirm the budget effective Oct 1.
