Civil Rights Complaint Alleges Discrimination in Montgomery Co. School Programs

Former Obama administration official filed federal civil rights complaint against Montgomery County school system

A former Obama administration official has filed a federal civil rights complaint claiming that the Montgomery County school system discriminates against minority children in its language-immersion programs.

The Washington Post reported that Will Jawando said in his complaint that the school district is violating federal law by failing to publicize or conduct robust outreach for the highly popular programs in areas with high percentages of black and Hispanic students.

He said that means the programs enroll high numbers of white students and deny opportunities to minorities and lower income children.

School officials told the Washington Post Wednesday that they hadn't seen the complaint and couldn't comment.

Jawando worked for the U.S. Department of Education and also recently lost a Democratic primary for Congress.
