Hundreds of people were expected to attend a meeting in Calvert County, Md., Tuesday night to talk about the future of a cemetery.
The owners of Southern Memorial Gardens Cemetery declared bankruptcy last summer. Many people paid for plots years ago, but with no one at the cemetery allowed to bury their loved ones because of the bankruptcy, mourning families now have to pay someone to go in, perform a memorial service and dig the grave.
They're wondering what's next.
“Legally the process right now is in the hands of the bankruptcy trustee. The bankruptcy trustee has to make a determination who he feels is going to be best suited to best take care of the community,” said Doug Lodge, former Southern Memorial Gardens Cemetery manager.
The meeting was from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Community Meeting Grace Brethren Church in Owings, Md.
