ARLINGTON, Va. -- A bank robbery suspect killed in a shootout with police Wednesday morning was a high school senior.
After a BB&T bank on Old Dominion Drive in McLean was robbed at gunpoint about 11:20 a.m., a suspect was chased to Arlington County, where he crashed a car into a telephone pole, according to construction workers who witnessed the crash.
Tips from those workers led police to the soccer field at Williamsburg Middle School, where they exchanged gunfire with the suspect, killing him.
The suspect was later identified as Hailu Brook, 19, of McLean. He was a student at Yorktown High School who lived in McLean. His father is a professor at George Washington University and the former deputy ambassador of Ethiopia to the United States.
Bob Boisture, a neighbor who witnessed the shooting, said three officers fired at Brook. Boisture estimated he heard about 20 gunshots.
The officers fired after Brook produced a handgun and refused to obey police orders to drop it, according to the Arlington County Police Department.
Nearby Williamsburg Middle School was locked down as a precaution, school officials said. The students were not in danger.
The three officers involved in the shooting are on routine paid administrative leave.
