The Washington Convention Center and Safeway celebrated the spirit of giving at the Ninth Annual Safeway Feast of Sharing.
About 5,000 attendees enjoyed a free traditional turkey meal with all of the trimmings served by hundreds of volunteers. Volunteers said it was about a 25 percent boost compared to last year.
Diners also were invited to participate in an "independence expo" featuring community service organizations, health screenings, and employment and training opportunities.
Older citizens could take part in "Sit and Be Fit," a health and nutrition program for the senior population.
The meal included four tons of turkey, 1,500 pounds of stuffing, 180 gallons of gravy and 1,000 pounds of collard greens, organizers said.
Mayor Adrian Fenty, D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton and other District officials also attended the feast.
