2 Killed in Carroll County Plane Crash

Two people died after a small plane crashed near a Carroll County farm, police say.

A single-engine plane took off from a private airstrip before 11 a.m. Saturday, police said. Federal investigators later said the plane was leaving an event.

It crashed in a soybean field near Baugher's Orchard and Farm in Westminster.

The pilot, 62-year-old Michael Kilpatrick, and 56-year-old Robert Johnson were  found dead at the scene of the plane crash, police said. They were the only people on board.

Maryland State Police and the Carroll County Fire Department responded to the scene and found the 2006 Quicksilver Ultralight plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating and the National Transportation Safety Board will determine what caused the crash, state police said.

The investigation will take a few days, and a report will be released in the coming weeks.
