A magnitude 2.5 tremor was focused near Pulaski, Va. -- in the southwestern part of the state.
USGS Geophysicist Don Blakeman said this type of minor earthquake generally only lasts about a second or two and feels like a sudden jolt.
"A lot of times people describe them as: 'I thought someone backed into the house'...sometimes they're heard as well, there will be a sharp noise," he said.
Blakeman says this was not related to the earthquake in Japan.
