Drivers in Virginia would pay more for gasoline if some state lawmakers have their way.
The state senate voted 31-9 today to adjust the fuel tax to accommodate changes in federal fuel efficiency standards.
Virginia's gas tax has been 17.5 cents per gallon for more than 20-years, but as cars become more fuel efficient, the state loses out on funds to build and repair roads.
If approved by the state house, and signed by the governor, the new rules would take effect April 2011.
The Republican controlled state house has traditionally blocked tax increases, and Gov. Bob McDonnell is opposed to the bill.
