Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and his wife, Katie, are coping with the same concern a lot of other parents have this time of year -- like what happens at graduation parties.
The O’Malleys' 18-year-old daughter, Tara, was hospitalized briefly Thursday night in Baltimore after attending a graduation celebration.
Tara O’Malley graduated Wednesday from Notre Dame Academy in Baltimore County.
According to a police report obtained by News4, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday an officer on foot patrol at the Inner Harbor "observed a white female on the sidewalk in the 700 blk of Light St. The female appeared to be unconscious."
The officer called medics and they transported O’Malley to Harbor Hospital.
O’Malley was not charged with anything, and there is no indication her blood-alcohol level was tested.
First lady Katie O’Malley issued this statement Friday:
"Martin and I would like to thank our friends, family, and concerned Marylanders who have expressed their sincere well wishes since Tara became ill and received medical treatment after attending a graduation celebration last night. Tara returned home last night, and is feeling much better.
"As we deal with this family matter and treat it as a teachable moment, we thank the public for respecting our privacy and encourage all parents and teenagers to be safe this graduation season."
Gov. O’Malley’s spokesman released a statement to the Associated Press Thursday night, calling the incident a private, family matter and asking that the O'Malley family's privacy be respected.
Gov. O'Malley is running for re-election and is expected to face former Gov. Bob Ehrlich in the governor's race this fall.
