Voters, candidates and the Board of Elections are preparing for the new process

D.C. voters began heading to the polls monday to cast their votes in the upcoming primary.

While Election Day is Sept. 14, early voting will run for two weeks leading up to it. Starting Monday, from 8:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. voters can go to 1 Judiciary Square from 8:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and vote using paper ballots or they can vote electronically.

"Weโ€™ve spent the last part of the year getting new voting equipment, poll books, writing new regulations, creating new training curriculums, training pole workers," said Rokey Suleman, executive director for D.C.'s Board of Elections and Ethics. "Weโ€™ve spent a good part of the year planning for this."

Starting Saturday, Sept. 4, there will be four other satellite locations available but with electronic voting only -- Turkey Thicket Recreation Center, the Chevy Chase Community Center, Hine Junior High School or Southeast Tennis and Learning Center.

"You just want to make sure that everying happens appropriately in terms of security and ballot security, and itโ€™s not just voting but also voter registration, so you want to make sure that it is done appropriately," said Adam Rubinson, campaign manager for mayoral candidate and D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray.
