Baltimore Police Meet With Hopkins, Colleges After Shooting

Baltimore police and the security chiefs of universities and Johns Hopkins Hospital have met to review plans for responding to emergencies like the shooting of a doctor last week at the hospital.

Commissioner Fred Bealefeld met Tuesday with representatives from Hopkins, the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Coppin State University, Loyola University, Maryland Institute College of Art, the University of Maryland at Baltimore, Morgan State University and University of Baltimore.

Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the department and the Hopkins hospital security force worked together well Thursday after a patient's son wounded his mother's doctor. The patient, Paul Warren Pardus, killed his mother and himself.

The review of other institutions' preparations found all have plans, but work needs to be done to prepare for better communications with city officers.

Police will work to make sure responders are using the same technical language and compatible communications equipment. The department also plans to work with schools and hospitals to practice evacuations.

Search warrants were also being executed Tuesday at Pardus' home in northern Virginia. Guglielmi said detectives are looking for any information about whether Pardus planned the attack.
