“Look at that, look at how they’re looking at me,” goes the song Chillin’ by Washington D.C. rising rap star, Wale.
Eyes are certainly on the controversial lyricist, but maybe not in the way that he’d hoped.
Wale took the mic Sunday at the D.C. Black Pride Legacy Festival. Not as headliner like he was originally scheduled, but as an un-paid guest performer.
About two weeks before the annual event, Wale abruptly cancelled, citing a family obligation. Black Pride organizers say Wale pulled out after discovering it was a gay-related event. Labels of “homophobic” soon followed by some in the LGBT community.
Black Pride gave Wale his $18,000 fee back, according to a report in the WashingtonCityPaper.com. Organizers rushed to snag another headliner, booking Soulful R & B singer J Holiday.
Then came this Tweet from Wale on Tuesday, five days before the festival:
“ILL BE THERE!! I'm not scared nor do I have any hatred for ANYBODY.”
The sun has now set on the 2010 D.C. Black Pride Festival. Wale’s career is another matter.
